Penn-Delco Students Honored at U.S. Courthouse Essay Ceremony

Two Penn-Delco fifth grade students were recognized this week in a prestigious ceremony held at the James A. Byrne United States Courthouse in Philadelphia.

Scarlett Tallarida (Pennell Elementary) and Cassidy Czaplicki (Aston Elementary) were selected as winners in a regional essay competition and invited to participate in a special session hosted by United States District, Magistrate, and Bankruptcy Court Judges for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.

The students’ essays addressed the thought-provoking question: “Does the United States Constitution address the grievances in the Declaration of Independence?”

During the ceremony, Scarlett and Cassidy had the unique opportunity to stand in the ceremonial courtroom and read their winning essays aloud before a panel of federal judges, family members, and fellow student honorees. The event celebrated not only their writing skills, but also their ability to thoughtfully analyze foundational documents in American history.

Following the readings, students were recognized for their accomplishments and had the chance to engage with members of the judiciary, offering a meaningful real-world connection to the concepts they explored in their essays.

This memorable experience highlighted the importance of civic education and gave students a rare glimpse into the judicial system in action.

Penn-Delco School District is proud of Scarlett and Cassidy for their outstanding achievement and for representing their schools with excellence.
